FAQs

  • What is CNG?

Compressed natural gas, or CNG, is the gaseous product of natural gas and is the first product that is separated during the distillation process. The gas is compressed under high-pressure to less than 1% of its volume at standard atmospheric pressure. CNG is natural, colorless, odorless, and non-toxic, and consist of 95% methane, 4% nitrogen and ethane, and about 1% carbon dioxide and propane.

  • What makes CNG 'green'?

Compressed Natural Gas is an environmentally clean alternative fuel that is the cleanest burning of all conventional fuels. CNG is composed of mostly methane and when burned during the combustion process, it produces carbon dioxide and water vapor which releases very minimal amounts of greenhouse gases.

  • Can schools apply for funding for their CNG fueling stations?

Yes! There are State and Federal grants available to schools to cover the costs of their ‘greener’ transportation system.

Schools that make the switch from diesel, propane, or gasoline fueled buses to CNG for their transportation services are eligible to receive LEED credits for their school.

  • Does CNG cost more than gasoline or diesel?

No, CNG is substantially less expensive than other alternative fuel sources and on average. CNG can cost ~30-50% less than the cost of gasoline, diesel, and propane.

  • Is it easy to get started using CNG once the fueling station is installed?

Yes! School buses equipped with the technology to transport with CNG are ready to go. With most school systems already leasing their school buses, it’s an easy process to rotate out your fleet.

  • How does Chalkboard CNG work with schools?

Chalkboard CNG purchases and owns the CNG fueling stations, then leases the equipment to you.

  • How does a CNG pump work?

A CNG fueling station works very similarly to a gasoline/diesel fuel pump with one exception, an extra safety step, you lock the nozzle in place before you begin filling up your bus. You lock in the nozzle and walk, the system will automatically stop filling when your bus is full.

  • What does Chalkboard CNG offer?

Chalkboard CNG’s goal is to help make the transportation of the future generation cleaner and safer. Chalkboard CNG is here to help you every step of the way, we will help design your system to meet your needs, we will install the system, and maintain the system for you.
